When You Want to Quit Your Weight Loss Journey: How to Stay Motivated to Lose Weight with God’s Strength

Lindy Schlabach - Christian Mindset & Weight Loss Coach Season 1 Episode 99
  • Colossians 3:23 says: “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”

I’d like to share 3 faith-based motivation truths with you, and I’d like you to tuck them in your heart: Are you ready?

    • Your health is a form of worship, we read in (Romans 12:1).
    • Small steps of obedience matter.Remember, it’s about obedience over the outcome?
    • Motivation flows from mission, not mood. I don’t believe in motivation to be honest but it’s a word we throw around so I’d like to challenge you to a new way of thinking around motivation. It flows from MISSION. What is your mission? Do you know? Is it to be a certain weight or pants size? Is it to be a better parent or more attractive to your spouse? What if it started from a desire to serve the Lord? What if all the rest flows from Him first? I mean, we KNOW it does, yet so often we’re so worried about everyone else, we forget that He has them too.
  • Here are a few things I’d like you to do :
  • 1st, Write your “why” rooted in faith. Not weight loss or abs, but prayerfully and with Holy Spirit guidance. Why do you want to lose weight? How will it serve God?
  • Next- Create a quick “motivation menu” (Scripture, worship, quick prayer, favorite Christian podcast). Which works best for you? Lord give me what I need is my favorite prayer and one I HOPE you’re praying since listening to this podcast.
  • Lastly- Pick 1 of the above motivators to start your day tomorrow. Which will you choose? Don’t forget to join the free community and share yours in the group!

  • Declare with me right now: “Lord, I work heartily for You. My health honors You.” Journal your thoughts about Romans 12:1

Oh, man, the baby was up from 2 to 4.

The struggle to want to wake up early on those mornings, which are so rare, to be honest, but they're really hard.

I crave my morning prayer time.

I crave that routine and reading.

I love waking up and getting my workout in and making breakfast.

And when that time gets disturbed, I feel like my whole day is off.

Like I get up intentionally two and a half hours before Adily so that I can pray, read, work out, and eat.

Like it is the staple in my day.

It is what sets me up so that I can be like the best wife and mom that I know God has called me to be.

So what happens when we don't get that sacred time to ourselves?

What happens when our plans don't happen?

We want to quit, right?

Like we think, why do I even try?

I've just, I've messed up again.

Today we're going to talk about staying motivated to lose weight when you want to quit using God's strength.

Are you ready?

Let's dive in.

Are you sick of trying diet after diet and not losing weight?

Are you tired of doubting your ability to actually lose weight in a healthy way?

Do you wish you could find a laid out for you plan that will help you stay accountable to your goals?

Hey, friend, I'm Lindy Schlabach, Christian Fitness & Nutrition Coach.

I gained 100 pounds in my late 20s and struggled for years to get it off.

So grab your pre-workout and let's chat.

Do you know that I have a free community of women just like you who want to lose weight with God's help?

I share meal plans, biblical encouragement, and tips on how to stay focused in your journey.

So, Colossians 3.23 says work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

So tell me, have you had a day or days fall apart like I did this morning?

I'm sure you probably have.

So how do you handle it when things don't go your way?

Do you believe the lie of all or nothing?

We've talked about this a thousand times before.

What if we started to focus on consistency instead of perfection?

What if we started to look for ways to serve God instead of the goals that we're working towards?

What if it's all connected?

Well, guess what?

It is all connected.

So I want you to think for a second.

Who are you showing up for each day?

Are you showing up for your kids?

Are you showing up for your spouse?

Maybe your boss or your friends?

Are you showing up for your church or the committees that you volunteer for?

Are you showing up for those people but not showing up for yourself?

And even more importantly, are you showing up for God first?

What if we started showing up for Him first?

And then ourselves?

And then our spouse?

And then our kids?

And then prayerfully discern what happens next?

Who do we serve next?

If you're called to serve anyone next.

You know, it's been really hard for me to not intentionally like every day work my business.

Which is such an important part of my life.

Like I have been doing this working with women one on one for over eight years.

And I'm not consistently working.

Like I have clients now.

But like I'm not like every day in my office like I was.

But God has told me that this mission right now, my purpose in life right now is to be present with my daughter.

And at first like that was a really hard realization because I have come to love this work that I do.

And He really just confirmed to me, keep sharing the podcast.

But be present with your baby.

That is where your heart's work is right now.

And sometimes when we really get into Holy Spirit connection and He speaks to us that way, it completely can sometimes shift the trajectory of the place that we're going.

But He will guide us and lead us to where we need to go.

It is so important to stay in tune with the Holy Spirit in your life and what the work that He wants to do.

So today I'd like to share with you three faith-based motivation truths, and I'd like you to tuck them in your heart.

So grab a pen.

Are you ready?

First, your health is a form of worship.

Your body, your movement, the way you speak to yourself, the way you feed yourself, it is a form of worship.

So we read that in Romans 12.1.

The next faith-based motivation truth, small standups of obedience matter.

Remember, it's about obedience to the Holy Spirit over the outcome of weight loss.

It is about obedience to the Holy Spirit regardless of the outcome.

The next truth is motivation flows from mission, not your mood.

I honestly don't believe in motivation, but it's a word we throw around, so I'd like to challenge you to a new way of thinking around motivation.

Motivation flows from your mission.

What is your mission?

Do you even know?

In The Biblical Weight Loss Framework, in the very last step, we talk about connecting with your purpose so that you can walk out the great commission as God has called you to in your life.

And with every woman that I've worked through this part of the framework, which has been probably about a dozen ladies up to this point since last summer, not one of them truly knows their purpose and mission in life.

You know what your mission is.

Is it to be a certain weight or pant size?

Is it to be a better parent or more attractive to your spouse?

What is your mission?

What if it started from a desire to serve the Lord?

And to really truly lean in to the Holy Spirit, call and conviction on your life.

What if all of the rest flows from him first?

I mean, let's be honest, like we know it flows from him first, yet so often we're so worried about everyone else, we forget that he has them too.

Like he's already looking out for your kids and your spouse and your coworkers and your friends and your church.

He's worried about them too.

He's worrying or he's working in them too.

We hear the old, I don't know if it's an adage or what, but you know, you can't pour from an empty cup.

And God is who fills our cup.

It's God who gives us the peace.

It's God who gives us the fruit.

And everything that we do flows out from what he does in us.

And if we're not making time to get up early and get in the word and pray and spend some time in quiet alone with your holy and heavenly father who loves you so much, you're missing out on a massive opportunity to do what he wants to do in your life.

It's so easy to want to quit on your weight loss journey.

But when we lean into his strength and we stay motivated in the mission to lose weight with him, it becomes not about the weight loss, it becomes about the work that he's doing in us when we walk in the truth and obey his word.

God has your kids.

He has your spouse.

You cannot control the things in your life that you're trying to control.

You don't have control at all.

Let it go.

Pray right now and ask the Lord to take that from you.

He has it.

He can do so much more with your surrender than he can do with your control.

Our life is about serving and stewarding our gifts well.

It's we can't quit.

We can't quit.

Our families need us.

Our friends need us.

Our spouse needs us to be healthy.

But we can't focus on our own strength.

We can't go on our own way.

It has to be about surrender to what he needs us to do.

So I want you to do a couple things.

First, I want you to write your why rooted in faith.

Why do you want to lose weight?

How will it serve God?

It's not about weight loss or abs.

But I want you to pray about it and lean into the Holy Spirit.

Lord, why is it that this tug at my heart continues to come around my weight loss journey?

Like if God continues to lead you to get healthy, let Him show you what that looks like.

Write your why around your weight loss rooted in faith.

When we connect to our why, we won't quit because it's not about weight loss.

It's not about abs.

It's about the purpose that God has placed in our lives.

And when we connect with Him and He shows us what that is, no amount of frustration or disruption or distraction or whatever will ever pull you away from your why that's rooted in your faith.

But it has to come from what He's placing in your life.

It's okay to want to lose weight.

For women, like the number one killer of women is heart disease.

And that comes from carrying visceral fat around your midsection.

So having a goal of weight loss isn't a bad thing.

But letting it be the focus is not going to get you there.

God has to be the one that is leading you in your choices.

So pray over it.

Write your why rooted in faith.

Next, create a quick motivation menu.

Write them down.

Scripture, worship, a prayer, Lord, give me what I need.

What's your favorite Christian podcast?

Hopefully mine's in there.

Which works best for you?

Lord, give me what I need is my favorite prayer and one I hope that you're praying since you've been listening to me hopefully for a while.

Create your motivation menu.

What is it?

Find a word that speaks to you and write down that scripture every single day.

I've been doing a Bible study in the U version and they talk about the soap method.

I'm probably not even going to remember what it is, but it's write your scripture, what you observe, ask God how he wants to do it in your life, and then pray over it and then repent.

And it's been really helpful for me.

Like most of the time, I'm just reading Bible verses.

I'm not really like writing it down or thinking as much about it.

But today was like the end of the first five days.

And so it went through all of the verses.

And it was really cool to see just reading those, like what I remembered that God had spoke to me through those verses.

So don't just read a verse, write it down, pray over it, ask him to reveal to you what it is that he needs to speak to you from that verse.

If he puts a verse on your heart, it's for a specific purpose.

Maybe it's for a specific season.

Write it down, pray over it, find your motivation menu.

Lastly, I want you to pick one of the above motivators to start your day tomorrow.

Are you going to start with prayer?

Are you going to start with scripture?

Are you going to start with worship or a podcast?

Ask him to guide you where you need to go.

Don't forget, join the free community.

I want to know what you're going to start yours with tomorrow.

So, share in the group.

Don't quit, don't quit, don't quit.

I've shared this a thousand times before, but if you have seven days in the week and you nail your workout, your meal plan, your nutrition, your water, your sleep in one day, fantastic, because it's not going to happen again.

It's consistency that builds up to results.

It's consistently spending time in prayer, asking the Lord to lead your choices.

Declare with me right now, Lord, I work heartily for you.

My health honors you.

Then go back and read Romans 12.1 again, and I want you to write down your thoughts about that.

Do the Soap Method, write it down, observe it.

What is He speaking to you?

Ask Him to reveal what it is that He needs you to know, and then pray over it and repent for any of the sin that you have in your life.

Maybe it is consistently quitting, and you don't want to do that anymore.

Ask Him to break the chains surrounding your, maybe it is the idolization of the number on the scale.

If you need to throw the scale away, throw it away.

If you want to get on it once a week, get on it once a week.

I weigh in every Friday morning.

It is just an accountability tool for me, and a lot of times I don't like what I see, but it helps me through the weekend to stay better on track with my goals.

Sometimes, not always, let's be real.

Heavenly Father, thank you for who you are.

Thank you for loving me through this journey.

Thank you, Holy Father, for a renewed sense of energy, joy, and faithfulness in my weight loss journey and my daily habits.

Help me to live and eat and move according to your will, Father.

Forgive me for taking my body for granted.

Forgive me for overtraining her or not training her at all.

Forgive me for gluttony and starvation, for trying to control when I know that your plans are perfect.

Lead me, Lord.

I love you so much.

Amen.

Hey, sis, I hope you enjoyed today's episode.

If so, would you take 30 seconds and share it with a friend?

Also, please leave a quick review for the show on Apple Podcasts.

It lights me up to know this podcast is helping you.

Okay, it's time to go make a protein shake and get my sweat on.

No more standing in the kitchen waiting for motivation to appear.

I will meet you back here for another episode.

God bless.
