What Does The Bible Say About My Body?

Lindy Schlabach - Christian Mindset & Weight Loss Coach Season 1 Episode 95

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (NLT): Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

What does that say about who God says you are? Here are 3 Truths About Your Body According to the Bible:

  1. It’s not shameful — it’s sacred

  2. It’s not broken — it’s a temple

It’s not yours to hate — it’s His to use

I'd like to challenge you for 30 days to speak 3 things DAILY over your body that are positive and encouraging! Will you do this?

Father, help me see my body the way you do. Teach me to care for it, not curse it. I want to honor you — mind, soul, and body. Lead me Lord, show me all you have for me and help me to be a good example of this to those around me. Thank you for the conviction to change. I love you Lord, Amen.

Have you ever had any thought about your body or blamed God for his poor workmanship and your makeup?

I hope this episode will bring you some freedom.

I want to go to the Word with you today and discover what scripture says about your body, your worth, and your identity.

Listen, I need 100 pounds.

Like, the body dysmorphia, still looking in the mirror and seeing my old self at times, like the stretch marks, the dimples, the cellulite, the scars from my body.

Like, it is so hard to love myself sometimes.

It is so hard to have a positive thought.

Like, lately my blood sugar has been crashing and I'm not quite sure why I'm gonna have some blood work done, but like, I get so frustrated with myself because I feel like I do the right things.

Like, I get seven to eight hours of sleep.

I drink half of my weight in ounces of water.

I work out five days a week.

Like, I eat fairly healthy.

Like, yeah, it's ice cream season.

I like to treat.

I'm not gonna live my life in eliminated food groups or like shaming myself for what I eat.

But like, sometimes I just get so frustrated because my body's not doing what I feel like she should be doing.

And I know that you're probably been in the same boat if you're not, like, if you've, you're probably in the same boat right now.

I mean, you probably wouldn't be listening to me.

I know how frustrating it can be, like, I know what it feels like when progress feels slow.

Like, we just talked about that last week or the week before.

1 Corinthians 6–19 to XX in the NLT says, Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?

Who is in you?

Whom you have received from God?

You are not your own.

You are bought at a price.

Therefore, honor God with your bodies.

What do you feel like that says about who God says you are?

I want to share 3 truths with you about your body according to the Bible.

The first truth, your body is not shameful.

It's sacred.

If Christ is the Lord of your life, he lives in you.

The old is gone.

The new has come.

You are sacred.

Your body is sacred.

It is a temple.

God lives inside of you.

He dwells there.

Your body was created in the image of God.

It is sacred.

The second truth, your body is not broken.

It's a temple.

She is a temple, a place where God dwells.

And the third truth is your body is not yours to hate.

It is his to use, to glorify his call in your life.

And you might think, well, I am so far from my weight loss goal.

Like, how can I glorify God in my weight loss journey?

But every step, every choice, every healthy thought that you have about yourself, that's God honoring.

Every time you choose to say no to a treat, when you've set that boundary with yourself, that honors him.

Every time you repent from that unhealthy thought about your body, and you talk about all the things that you love, that's a way to glorify him.

We should be glorifying him in our thoughts and in our actions.

And I struggle here alongside of you.

That doesn't mean that his mercies aren't new.

They are every day, every moment, every choice.

We can choose a different way.

We can repent and we can say, Lord, I'm struggling right now.

Help me to see myself as you see me, sacred, a temple, and yours to use to your glory.

You are not meant to abuse your body or talk smack to her.

You're also not meant to overindulge or starve yourself.

You're definitely not meant to over-exercise or under-exercise.

You are called to honor your body because it is the living God of the universe who created all things in you and his image that lives in you.

And it is our duty to love our bodies, to move our bodies, to fuel our bodies properly, and to speak to our bodies as he leads us to.

You're not where you want to be in your weight loss journey because you're not letting him lead.

You're stuck in the world idea of what's healthy and how to lose weight, and it's not working.

It's not working because you're under-fueled, you're not moving properly, you're probably overworked, you might have lower body pain, which means you have poor hip strength.

Most people who have back issues, it's not a back issue.

It's a lack of mobility in your hips issue.

And when we don't move our bodies as the temple, sacred to God as they are, we're unhealthy.

We have to stay medicated, and that is not the call.

So quite a few years ago, my massage therapist slash life coach, her name is Jeri, she's the most amazing person ever.

She taught me years ago, she encouraged me to see my brain and my body as essentially two separate entities.

And when you speak ugly things to your body or even have negative thoughts, our bodies respond to that and they react and feel mood like they hurt.

And when you start to have constant thoughts of, I'm fat, I'm tired, I'm never gonna reach this goal, like that is where your body goes and she stays.

But when you speak life to your body every single day, especially the parts that you struggle to like, that is when she starts to respond properly.

And that's what I want to challenge you to do today, this week moving forward.

Every day for the next 30 days, I want you to speak three positive truths of life over your body, even if you don't feel them.

A lot of times when I'm doing my out loud affirmations, I don't just speak the things that I feel I am, I speak the things that I want God to make me.

I'll say I am flexible, I am healthy, I am happy.

I'll say things like, I am kind, I am a person of action.

I don't always feel like I am those things, but they're things I hope to be.

So we're going to start speaking life over our body, and we're going to start thanking God for the gift of our body.

We're going to start thanking our body for all of the things that she does for us every single day.

Because if you got up and you got out of bed, that's a blessing that some people didn't have.

If you have hands to brush your teeth, that's a blessing that some people don't have.

If you're able to look at your children and spend time with them, that is a blessing that some people don't have.

And we take these things for granted.

We take every morning for granted that we don't wake up with the first thought and say, thank you, Father, for life and breath today.

Thank you for this body that I get to live in.

God didn't have to give you your body.

He didn't have to put you on this earth.

But thousands and thousands of years ago, 6,000 years ago before he said, let there be light, he knew who you would be.

He numbered every hair on your head.

And the fact that you think that you're not worthy because you're not at your weight loss goal, that breaks his heart.

It breaks his heart when we cannot see ourselves as he sees us.

When we accepted Christ as our Savior, we died to our old self.

And when God looks at us, he sees Christ in us.

He doesn't see our weight.

He doesn't see all of the things about ourselves that we don't like.

He sees Christ in us.

Okay, well, you know, we see the meme on social media about, you know, if you only had one day to live, you know, I used to think I would do X, Y, Z, but Jesus knew and he washed feet.

Right?

That is such a powerful image of the living God getting down and kneeling at the feet of his disciples to wash their feet and serve.

Right?

Like, what a powerful image.

And he does the same for us every single day, that he offers us life and breath.

But we sit around and we take advantage and we want to be where whoever is that has reached the goal that you want to reach.

And so we think, I've never done it this far.

I'm 50 years old.

It's never going to happen for me.

I'm 43 years old.

It's never going to happen for me.

That's not God's truth.

If God continues to bring you to those podcasts over and over and over and over again, He wants you to live a healthier whole life with Him, not the head.

Join the Biblical Weight Loss Framework.

I teach you how to do these things.

This is a three-month program that you are going to go through some really hard things.

I'm going to ask you to face some really hard things, but we're going to pray through them together.

And God's going to meet you where you are.

And He is going to start making a change in you that you've never experienced before.

You are beautiful just as you are.

And so, pay, and it's fantastic to have goals, goals that you have set with God.

But you are never going to achieve your weight loss goals or sustain them until you learn to love yourself today as you are.

Because no amount of weight loss will make you love yourself.

Your worth is not in your weight.

It's in the fact that you are a loved and chosen child of God.

Your identity is in Him.

When we cling to that truth, when we lean into God's Word and read about what the Bible says about our bodies, that she's sacred, she's a temple, and to use for His glory, it becomes about so much more than vanity, weight loss goals, abs, the new dress that you've been dying to buy or fit into that you've had for years.

It's not about that.

When we honor Him with our choices, when we glorify Him in all things in our weight loss journey, He continues to convict us and sanctify us in a process that's not easy, but in the end, it is where He needs you to go.

This is not easy work.

If it was easy, everyone would do it.

This is not easy work.

Laying down your flesh, your calorie counting, your obsession about keto or removing food groups, like those are not biblical things.

They're not biblical things.

It creates idols in our lives that pull us away from God and what He wants for our lives.

Heavenly Father, help me to see my body the way you do.

Help every ear that is listening to this podcast see their body the way that you do.

Teach us to care for our bodies, Lord, not curse it.

We want to honor you, body, mind, and spirit.

Lead us, Lord, and show us all that you have.

Help us to be a good example of these things to those around me.

Thank you for Holy Spirit Conviction to Change.

I love you, Lord.

Thank you for loving me.

Thank you for your word that speaks so much truth over my body.

Let me walk beside you hand in hand, letting you lead and guide this Biblical Weight Loss Journey because I know, Lord, that you want me to be healthy so I can walk out the Great Commission.

Thank you that as I go, as I learn these things, and as I move to be healthier inside and out, that you would bring me the people in my life that I am to serve.

Let me lay down my flesh every single day.

Let me lay down my goals at the foot of the cross, Lord, and put into me what it is that you need me to focus on.

Reveal to me those things in my past that maybe I forgot, that I need to heal from so that I can walk in the God-given truth, that I am wholly made in the identity of Christ who died for me.

Forgive me, Father, for the harsh words I've spoken over my body.

Thank you for this body that I get to love.

Let me speak kindly to her.

Give me the words to speak to her, Lord.

We love you.

We praise you.

And we ask these things in your precious and holy name.

Amen.
