What to do When You're Scared to Fail Your Weight Loss Plan..Again

Lindy Schlabach - Christian Mindset & Weight Loss Coach Season 1 Episode 92

Do you believe that God cares about your body and fear of failure? Of course He does. Here are 3 Ways to Move Forward When You’re Afraid to Fail:

  1. Acknowledge past efforts without shame — they were practice, not proof of failure. It is never too late to try again, and when we acknowledge our need for Holy Spirit guidance, we can forgive ourselves while we lean into God’s plan.

  2. Ask God to renew your heart, not just your habits (Psalm 51:10). create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.: In the Bible, being steadfast means remaining spiritually strong, unwavering, and firmly committed to God despite hardships or trials. We’ve all faced trials and hardships in our weight loss goals, but choosing to follow God means we are firmly committed because of His promise to us.

  3. Start small. Choose one thing that builds trust with yourself. All or nothing doesn’t work, just the opposite in fact. I’ve worked with women for over 8 years in weight loss and an all or nothing approach leaves us full of shame, frustrated and we end up quitting when life takes a turn, and it ALWAYS takes a turn. ONE thing, do ONE thing well, then add another thing. Stop putting pressure on yourself to do ALL the things, focus on ONE, pray for strength and courage of conviction and nail that ONE thing before you add another.

Philippians 1:6 (NLT): “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Listen, I know the struggle to try and fail and try again.

I have literally been losing and gaining the same five pounds for the last two months.

And it is so frustrating when I'm the one who is responsible for making poor choices.

Have you ever failed and been afraid to start again?

Maybe you quit years ago or months ago or maybe just last week.

What if this is just another failed attempt to get healthy?

Listen, it's not.

You are not alone.

Today we're going to talk about what to do when you're scared to fail again and again and again and we'll look at what the Bible says about starting over even when you feel like you've, quote, messed up before.

Are you sick of trying diet after diet and not losing weight?

Are you tired of doubting your ability to actually lose weight in a healthy way?

Do you wish you could find a laid out for you plan that will help you stay accountable to your goals?

Hey friend, I'm Lindy Slayball, Christian fitness and nutrition coach.

I gained 100 pounds in my late 20s and struggled for years to get it off.

So grab your pre-workout and let's chat.

I'd like to invite you to join the Biblical Weight Loss Framework if you are ready to take a Holy Spirit led approach to weight loss God's way.

It is a 90 day deep dive into traumas triggers, working to overcome the things that you've struggled with in the past, and how to prayerfully heal and move through them.

We're going to talk about nutrition and create a specific plan just for you with your fitness and make meal plans and provide you with all the things that you need to lose weight according to God's will.

And eventually in the last step of the framework, we're going to talk about your God given purpose, because the ultimate call of this life is to live out the Great Commission and make disciples as we go where we live, work and play.

And so what does that mean for your life?

How does that look?

So listen, I gained 100 pounds in my late 20s.

I had done a keto diet.

I was grieving from the loss of my grandpa and I laid on the couch for 13 months after he passed away.

And one day it was like God just reached down and pulled me off the couch.

And I was determined to get healthy.

But that day I got up, I plugged in a Turbo Jam DVD that I'd bought 10 years before.

And I couldn't even complete the warm up.

Like literally could not complete the warm up.

I sat down, I cried, I failed, I quit again.

And it wasn't until years later I decide to actually make true change.

But I was so far from God then.

I was working to get my life together or so I thought, use those words together in very loose quotations.

And even today I still struggle with finding my worth and my weight.

I'm terrified of getting back to where I was before.

But fear of failure is often rooted in past attempts that didn't go how we hoped.

But God is not keeping score.

He's inviting us back again and again and again.

He did for me and he is for you too.

So your heart must be open to it or you wouldn't be here listening to this podcast.

Shame has no place in your weight loss journey.

It is a lie straight from the pit of hell.

And if you're anything like me, the reason you're not at your weight loss goal is because you're not letting God lead.

You've bought into the lie of diet culture that less is more.

And when God has told you different, but you're afraid to eat more food or skip a workout or a workout at all.

And if you continue to try the next diet or supplement without leaning into the Holy Spirit's guidance in your weight loss journey, you're just going to continue to be frustrated and disappointed and want to quit.

If you keep quitting without consulting your Holy and Heavenly Father, maybe it's time for a new approach.

What does God's Word say about fear?

We read about fearing God.

Do you fear God when it comes to failing in your weight loss journey?

Not in the fact that he would ever shame you, but in the fact that you're not relying on him to lead and guide you when he wants to.

What if we started to fear the Lord as the Israelites did and started to actually listen to the Holy Spirit that dwells inside of us as believers?

Back in those days in the Old Testament, the Israelites had to actually travel to a tent when the cloud was over it and God would show up for them and they would repent and offer sacrifices.

In the New Testament, Jesus comes, he dies as the ultimate sacrifice, the lamb, the perfect offering for our sins.

And we can go repent of our past mistakes and just continuing and continuing to quit and quit and quit and we can repent and allow him to take over.

If you're listening to God and seeking his will over your body and your movement and your food choices, you will achieve the results that you desire.

Fear has no place in your failed attempts at weight loss.

This is what we do in the biblical weight loss framework.

We are learning to break chains of diet culture, recognize the triggers, and heal from unhealthy practices and habits that we've created that do not align with his work.

So a verse that I absolutely loves comes from Philippians 1.6.

It says, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

That means that God is always working on us.

If we go to him, ask him to lead and guide us, and then walk in Holy Spirit obedience regardless of the outcome of weight loss.

Do you believe that God cares about your body?

Do you think that he cares about your fear of failing?

Of course he does.

So I want to share with you right now three ways to move forward when you are afraid to fail.

Number one is acknowledge past efforts without shame.

How do we do that?

We pray.

We ask the Lord to remove that spirit of shame living in us.

They were practice.

Your past efforts were not for nothing.

They were practice, not proof of failure.

John C.

Maxwell wrote a book called Feeling Forward.

And when we quit, like that's the only time you actually fail when you stop striving.

But if you're here and you're listening to this, you have a desire in your heart to do better.

And God is working in your heart.

But you have to learn to lay down your control and lean into the Holy Spirit.

It is never too late to try again.

The Holy Spirit will guide us.

But we have to forgive ourselves from this feeling of shame and control and ask God to take over and let's lean into His plan.

So step two, ask the Lord to renew your heart, not just your habits.

In Psalm 51 10, we read, it says, created me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Do you know what steadfast means?

I was, I've looked this up before and I looked it up yesterday.

I want to share what it means as according to the Bible.

Being steadfast means remaining spiritually strong, unwavering and firmly committed to God despite hardships or trials.

We've all faced trials and hardships in our weight loss journey, but choosing to follow God means we are firmly committed because of His promise to us.

Renew my heart, Father, not just my habits.

Show me what it is that you have for me and let me not just focus on vanity, but a heart posture of self-control and patience and goodness and gratitude.

Step 3.

Start small.

I have said this a thousand times.

Choose one thing that builds trust with yourself.

All or nothing does not work.

Just the opposite, in fact.

I've worked with women for over eight years in weight loss and nutrition, and an all or nothing approach leaves us full of shame, frustrated, and we end up quitting when life takes a turn.

And guess what?

It always takes a turn.

You, if you have seven days in a week and you nail your workout, your meal plan, everything, your water, your sleep one day, fantastic, because that is not the reality for most people.

One thing, do one thing well, practice one thing well.

Maybe it's food prep, maybe it's exercise, maybe it's water, maybe it's putting your phone down, maybe it's rest.

Perfect it, practice it for 30 days.

Once you feel like it's become a part of who you are, add one more thing.

Stop putting pressure on yourself to do all the things.

Pray for strength and courage of conviction and nail that one thing that God leads you to before you add another.

Ask him, Lord, where do I need to focus most?

For a lot of you, it's probably getting up earlier, putting your phone down, stop scrolling on social media, and spending time in prayer and in the word, first thing before you even touch your cup of coffee.

We're not touching our phones or anything in the morning before we pray, before we read the word, before we workout, before we have our lunch, healthy lunch packed and prepped.

Prioritizing these things is going to lead you to more success instead of more failure.

Heavenly Father, I give you my fear of failure.

Replace it with faith in your work inside of me.

You are not finished with me yet, Lord, and I am grateful for that.

Forgive me for all the times I forget to lean on you.

Help me to remember your Holy Spirit inside of me and lean on you in all things.

Thank you for new mercies each morning, Lord.

I love you so much.

And it's in Jesus' name, I pray, amen.
