Break Bread, Not Your Goals: Managing Food and Fellowship

Lindy Schlabach - Christian Mindset & Weight Loss Coach Season 1 Episode 57

I overate big time at Christmas, our new baby is here, we had much celebrating to do! But one morning I woke up feeling like I'd downed 3 bottles of cabernet, sugar hangovers are the worst!

How do we enjoy fellowship without sabotaging our goals?
1. Focus on who you're with, not your plate.
2. Bring a healthy dish if eating at someone's home. Cook a healthy meal if at your home or check out the menu if you're eating out.
3. Have a plan, be mindful, practice discernment.

Let's practice balancing social AND spiritual nourishment. We can and we must if God is going to lead our weight loss goals.

Are you sick of trying diet after diet and NOT losing weight?

Today, we're gonna talk about breaking bread and not our goals.

Oh man, oh man.

Have you ever overeaten at a family dinner, church potluck?

Maybe just sitting on the couch with a bag of chips or box of Oreo cookies or Girl Scout cookies?

Yeah.

There have been so many times in my life that I have woke up the next morning thinking, oh my gosh, did I really eat all that?

Not having a sugar hangover that was way worse than any alcohol hangover I had in my party days.

I feel like Christmas this year, there was one day that I woke up, it legit felt like I drank three bottles of wine.

I had eaten so much sugar the night before.

How do we break bread and not our goals?

How do we enjoy fellowship with our people without sabotaging our health?

The struggle is really real.

I realize Christmas time is a little bit different, but there are times in just normal life where we get a little out of hand with something we weren't planning on, or we try to emotionally eat or fix a solution, or fix a problem with ice cream or whatever.

It leads us to guilt and shame, which we've talked a lot about.

But how do we get to the point where we just eat with our people?

We're breaking bread.

We're not ruining our goals.

We're not sabotaging all the hard work we've put in.

How do we get there?

Let's talk about it.

I've got a couple steps for you to follow along with.

So grab a pen and let's chat.

Hey sister, welcome to Her Weight Loss Mindset.

Are you sick of trying diet after diet and not losing weight?

Do you wish you could find easy meal prep ideas for your family so you're not standing in the kitchen yet again, wondering what everyone is going to eat for dinner that's in line with your goals?

Do you spend hours Googling easy workouts but then have no time to do them because your motivation only goes so far?

Hey there, friend, I'm Lindy Schlabach, Christian Fitness & Nutrition Coach, encourager and friend.

I gained 100 pounds in my late 20s and struggled for years to get it off.

Seven years ago, I found a basic system that works and has helped me lose over 90 of those pounds.

I've been working with women in online fitness and nutrition ever since.

In this podcast, I'll teach you how to lose weight in a way that honors God without obsessing about the scale, and meal plan and prep for your family, and follow a macro-based plan that allows you to eat the foods you love while you reach your goals.

It's time to give God your health journey and watch him make you new from the inside out.

You've got this, sister.

Now, go grab your pre-workout or your third coffee like me, and let's chat.

If you are struggling to lose weight in a Holy Spirit-led way, join the Biblical Weight Loss Framework.

We're taking a Holy Spirit-led approach to weight loss.

We're recognizing triggers, creating healthy mindset, routine practices.

We are talking fitness, nutrition, all of the things.

So you can find the link to join us in the show notes below.

And I look forward to working together.

So, oh man, let's talk about it.

Breaking our bread and not our goals.

How do we manage food and fellowship?

This struggle is real.

It's like the second you decide that you're gonna start, you know, making healthier choices.

You go out to eat with all your girlfriends and then everyone is ordering dessert when you swore that you weren't going to.

So how do you, how do you navigate that?

How do you stick to your goals when everyone else around you just isn't?

I'm gonna give you a couple of steps today that you can take and apply to your lives.

So the first one is we're gonna focus on who we're with and not our plate.

I think sometimes too often we are focusing on, like I know for me anyway, like I'm focusing on the next bite.

Like, oh my gosh, this is so delicious.

Like I just can't wait to eat it.

And I tend to eat really fast, which is a very unhealthy habit.

And then, you know, it's like, oh, let me get onto the dessert plate.

So it's really, the struggle here for me is very real.

So I'm talking to you out of someone who's working through this.

I don't have this all figured out.

But when we focus on the people that we're around and not what we're eating, we can be in the moment.

We're not focusing on what we're eating.

We're focusing on the people that we get to spend time with, which is such a blessing, right?

So maybe you're going somewhere or you're going to someone's house to eat.

You can take a healthy dish or if you're cooking, you can make a healthy meal.

If you're going out to eat, you can look at the menu ahead of time and have a plan and then pray for the strength to stick to that plan when no one else is going to make a healthy choice.

So there are some things you can do very specifically in this area.

The third one, have a plan.

Be mindful and pray for discernment.

So, if we are really set on letting God lead our goals and really focus on Him taking control of our choices, this is an area that is going to take time.

You may flake or flail on the first couple of times.

That's okay.

Grace over grind, progress over perfection.

You may nail it the first couple of times and then the next three times completely fall off the wagon.

That's okay.

Progress over perfection, His mercies are new each day.

We're not living in a cycle of shame anymore.

We're creating these habits so that we can focus on the people that we're with.

We can focus on the fellowship or maybe a discipleship opportunity if you're eating with lost people.

There are so many things that we can focus on that are outward.

Again, the call of the Great Commission is to make disciples.

When we can focus on other people and living for Christ so that we can serve, we're going to reach our weight loss goals because we're not thinking about ourselves.

We're not obsessing about this scale.

We're asking God to give us strength to make the next right choice, to do the next right thing.

And then we're walking in Holy Spirit-led obedience.

And that is the game changer.

When we focus on who we're with and not our plate, we're going to reach our goals.

When we bring healthy dishes and stop sacrificing our conviction just because other people are, that's when we reach our goals.

When we have a plan, when we're mindful, when we pray for wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and discernment, that's when we're going to reach our goals.

We're going to break bread with our friends.

Eat bread with your friends, beloved.

Eat bread with your friends.

Just don't sabotage your goals.

You can chew smaller portions.

You can stay hydrated.

You can open up engaging conversation.

You can talk about Jesus.

He broke bread with his disciples.

Think about that.

He was, he raised from the dead.

He sneaks into this room.

The disciples don't know who he is.

And then all of a sudden, he's breaking bread and their eyes are opened.

He was being intentional with the people he was with.

We can balance social and spiritual nourishment through prayer, through seeking his will, his guidance, and his strength, his self-discipline, because your humanness and your flesh is in there.

And when someone else goes to order something that isn't in line with you but looks really good, and you stay on the course that God has laid out for you, it's not that you can't enjoy that meal another time, but if he's calling you specifically in that moment, obey, listen, not even for the weight loss goal, but just simply for the fact that he knows what's best for you.

He wants what's best for you.

I'm going to challenge you.

Practice mindful eating during your next group meal.

Practice fellowship during your next group meal.

Practice asking other people questions about their lives.

Practice prayer before you go.

Be intentional with the people that you're with.

Focus on the fellowship and not the food.

God will lead you.

He will give you the strength that you need.

And then you have the courage to walk in that obedience.

Hey Sweets, I hope you enjoyed today's episode.

If so, would you take 30 seconds and share it with a friend who may also want to lose weight without all the dieting and restriction?

Also, please leave a quick review for the show on Apple Podcast.

It lights me up to know this podcast is helping you.

Okay, it's time to go make a protein shake and get my sweat on.

No more standing in the kitchen waiting for motivation to appear.

I'll meet you back next week for another episode.

Be blessed!
